We started our speech about hydrogen sulfide scavengers in the previous post

And here we will continue the same topic

by completing the explanation of other elements related to H2S scavengers

So, we will put a list of element for each post

Hydrogen Sulfide Scavengers Technologies

There are two main mechanisms for hydrogen sulfide action

The H2S may act by surface adsorption or ionic precipitation.

The selection of proper technique depends on many factors

one of these factors is the flow of fluid 

For example, we need enough turbulence for H2S scavenger to work in case of surface adsorption mechanism.

This turbulence can ensure good environment for the reactants to complete the reaction.

Also, the produced byproducts can determine if this mechanism is good or not.

Copper based H2S scavengers

For example, Copper compound can be used to control H2S. 

But the produce cupper can produce large amounts of corrosion when in contact with ferrous.

So, the use of copper compounds may or may not be the best choice as hydrogen sulfide scavenger.

Zinc based H2S scavengers

Another example is related to the use of Zinc compounds (carbonate or oxide)

Which is perfect as it can work in any PH

also it can cause fast and efficient precipitation for sulfides.

But this reaction produces huge amounts of deposits of zinc sulfides in the equipment.

Chemical oxidizers

Many oxidizing agents may be used as hydrogen sulfide scavengers

especially in the petroleum industry. 

But the equipment corrosion is the main problem while using these components.

As they are not selectively react with H2S, but also they can react with the equipment material. 

Examples are (H2O2 – Na percarbonate – Chlorine dioxide and others)

Aldehydes H2S scavengers

May be good in surface removal for H2S, but being carcinogenic is a big problem.

Not only the health hazards, Aldehydes (like formaldehyde) are very slow in removal of H2S.

Triazine components

Widely used in the market recently.

Triazine components are low price, efficient and proper hydrogen sulfide scavenger choice 

But it still has some disadvantages, 

As triazine based hydrogen sulfide scavengers cannot work in acidic environment

and also they need temperature levels more than (40 C) to work effeciently.

This temperature and PH may not be suitable for many applications.

Any way, as we can see, many mechanisms can be used 

but by selection of the most proper one for your industry.

H2S scavengers hazards and controls

Although, it is used to control a significant hazard

But, this dose not mean that hydrogen sulfide scavengers are quite safe.

As any chemical compound, they can be very dangerous.

If we are not controlling these chemicals properly, they can affect health, safety and environment

So, how can we determine the risks of any H2S scavenger to avoid its bad impacts ? 

The answer of this question is very simple and well known.

We have to deal with the hydrogen sulfide scavenger as any other chemical compound.

We must get the safety data sheet for these components (SDS)

This SDS shall contain every single data and information that is related to this chemical compound.

Its flammability, toxicity, PH, reactivity, effect on any organ and first aid advices in case of contact.

For sure we will discuss SDS in deep in many of our coming posts.

But until this time, you have to gather all data related to your chemical from the manufacturer or vendor.

And also you need always to use the Propper PPE for these chemicals to avoid unplanned contacts.
