what is shoring in construction

This article will be a short answer for the question what is shoring in construction .

We will also identify in short terms some of the shoring techniques

And at the end, we will know what are the three main protection methods against cave-ins other than shoring .

Check the elements for fast jump between the article parts.

What is shoring in construction

what is shoring in construction

Shoring is the method used for temporary supporting a structure or excavation.

This is done to prevent collapse of the building or trench

By applying one of the shoring methods, we can protect not only the building or excavation,

but also we are protecting whoever working inside the area from soil collapse.

Shoring id driven from the expression (shore), which means some kind of prop insertion (wood or metal).

Depending on the nature of the tile and the purpose of shoring, it may be vertical, angled or horizontal.

What is the purpose of shoring

Shoring is important for many reasons:

During excavation works, shoring is used to ensure safety for the workers inside to avoid collapse.

While, in case of cracked walls repairs, shoring also is needed to reinforce these walls.

If there are an adjacent building that needs to be pulled down and we need to avoid its impact on other buildings.

Different types of shoring systems

They differ due to the need of shoring

The following classification can explain:

shoring for buildings

We can use either:

Racking Shore

If we are facing an unsafe wall that need to be supported, we can used some lateral rakers as a temporary support.

The raker here can meet the wall at 60 to 70 degree angle for better support.

Foundations construction

This is also temporary, as we use this method to support the construction loads until finishing the foundations construction.

Timber jacks and shoring beams are commonly used in this method.

shoring for excavation and trenches

This is done by applying some controls which may be engineering or administrative.

Here the shoring techniques are used to provide safety for the excavation and the workers inside.

As it is very common that the excavation products or walls can collapse causing serious injuries or even fatalities if engulfment occurred.

And there is a difference between shoring which prevents the collapse and shielding.

Shielding is used as mitigation to protect workers when collapse occur.

Hydraulic shoring

Using hydraulic pistons to push outward either steel sheets or wood sheets against the excavation walls.

Soil nailing

This is done by inserting steel bars inside pre-drilled holes

These are grouted downwards usually with no tension.

And then, isolated soil nails may be used at the surface.

Shoring in ships

In case of damaged parts of a ship or vessel, we can use shoring to fix the damaged parts and prevent leakage.

This solution is considered a temporary solution as it can be affected by the vessel movement.

In this case, shoring may be:

Proud shoring

Using timber pad pieces to shore the damaged parts on deck or deck head.

It is then prefered to use timber wedges to tighten the structure.

Vertical shoring

In this case we use vertical timber between the deck and deck head  to support a hatch on the deck.

To ease the loads on weak structures, we can use timber pad pieces.

Other 3 protection methods against cave-ins

They were mentioned in other post, you may need to read it for better differentiation between them.

These methods are called: shielding, Sloping and Benching

Each one of these methods has its uses and conditions.

And all of them are used in excavation activities.

The selection of each one of them depends on the nature of excavation and soil type.

Also the soil classification is mentioned in this post if you want to check.
