Previously, it was a common term used in military activities.
But now and what we mean is the safety intent of using this term.
in short terms, it is used to describe the situation in which workers put themselves in front of hazard

But for simple explanation, consider yourself is standing in front of a train rail way.
Then the train is threatening your life. now you are inside the line of fire.

First example, if the workers are working inside an area in which a mobile loader is moving.
The existence of any worker inside the loader’s movement ways is exactly the line of fire.
Because being in this way makes the worker exposed to harm if he is hit by the loader.
Another example, during mechanical maintenance activities,
neglecting the mechanical isolation process for the equipment is very risky.
The worker is in great danger if the equipment was operated for any reason.
If the equipment was operated, the worker or a part of his body may be caught in between the mechanical parts of the equipment.
So, this is also the line of fire which has to be avoided in this activity.
The last example which is very common in lifting operations,
moving of workers below the lifted loads is a great example for line of fire.
As now the load is forming a great hazard if fell on or adjacent to the moving workers.
So, in order to avoid any unwanted consequences, the best control is to avoid being in the line of fire.

Line of fire safety can be enhanced by many factors.
We can categorize these factors as the following:
Human factors:
Like the worker’s competency, attitude, mental health and proper supervision.
Conducting a toolbox talk or a pre-job safety meeting helps workers to identify the surrounding hazards.
This for sure has a huge influence in the level of line of fire safety.
Work related factors:
The nature of the activity and the proper control measures play a great role in both the severity and the likelihood of the risk.
But it is more important to train a first aider in the team to be able to apply these first aids when needed.
For example, if we are in front of an excavation work.
The line of fire here appears when workers are inside the excavation and exposed to soil collapse hazard.
So, proper control by shoring the excavation can prevent the contact between the worker and the hazard.
In this case we are able to save the workers from being in the line of fire.
many other factors can help preventing this bad effect of facing the hazards.

In this section, let’s mention in brief some of the controls that can decrease the risks.
But we need first to know that we have to ways to decrease the risk value.
Either to work on decreasing the chance of risk to occur,
or to decrease the severity of consequences.
and for sure, the first choice is better.
So, their are many controls that can improve the line of fire safety by decreasing the likelihood.
Like selecting competent experienced workers, implementing the proper safety supervision, proper communication,
proper activity planning before starting the job, putting automatic means to detect the hazards and notify about it.
Also, being ready to face the event is good to decrease the severity of consequences.
Here, we can talk about using proper PPE for the workers,
Availing proper emergency equipment like first aids,
Preparation and training on the emergency plan.
By this way of thinking, we can avoid many unwanted accidents
